Teams from the University of Jyvaskyla and Aalto University in Finland grew an atomically thin, two-layer film of tin telluride and confirmed it behaves as a topological crystalline insulator โ a material class that had been predicted but never actually made until now. Its edges carry special conducting states protected by crystal symmetry, and remarkably, those properties hold up even at room temperature.
