Stanford researchers discovered that immune cells from the bloodstream begin breaching the blood-brain barrier as early as middle age, transforming into microglia โ the brain's own immune cells. Published in Nature on July 30, the team confirmed this using somatic mutation tracing in matched human blood and postmortem brain tissue. Strikingly, this process doesn't appear to happen in mice or non-human primates โ it may be uniquely human. Could this newly discovered cell migration hold the key to future treatments for Alzheimer's or other brain diseases?
