On August 5, a Falcon 9 lofted AST SpaceMobile BlueBird 11, 12, and 13 into orbit from Cape Canaveral โ giant direct-to-cell satellites designed to deliver broadband to ordinary phones with zero special hardware required. The new batch nearly doubles peak download speeds compared to earlier BlueBirds, and the company already has 42 satellites in production. As the constellation grows, space-based cell coverage could become as routine as a normal carrier. Will satellite-direct service finally end dead zones for good?
