๐ช James Webb Reveals Neptune's Moon Nereid Survived an Ancient Moonpocalypse
For 70 years, astronomers puzzled over why Nereid orbits Neptune in such a wild, elongated path. New James Webb Space Telescope spectroscopy shows Nereid formed near Neptune originally, then got flung into its chaotic orbit when the giant moon Triton crashed in from the outer solar system, destroying all of Nereid's siblings. It may be the sole survivor of Neptune's original moon system. Does that make Nereid the loneliest moon in the solar system?
