NASA's James Webb Space Telescope discovered a third giant planet โ Beta Pictoris d โ hiding in one of the most studied star systems in the Milky Way, and it did so using a completely new method. Instead of spotting a point of light, Webb detected the planet's unique chemical fingerprint via moderate-resolution spectroscopy, the first time a planet has been directly found this way. Beta Pictoris d is at least twice Jupiter's mass and orbits at roughly Neptune's distance from its star. How many other hidden planets are out there waiting to be sniffed out?
